Today is Tactical Tuesday.
Today we are gonna take a look at an alarm. This is just an ordinary alarm that is used on phones, on watches, or a kitchen alarm. How can we utilize an average alarm towards our goals? Well something that most people tend to completely neglect,
Taking a break.
Yes, I know, I know. “Who has time for a break?”, “I have to get this done ASAP.”, and on. Hear me out, Let us say you devote an hour of your time and you go at it hard core for about 20 minutes and then just, out of no where come to a block. Here is when your mind and body are telling you it is time to take a break. There are two methods to taking a break. The first is by thinking about the task at hand but trying to look at it from a further view to gain a new outlook. This means stop writing, coding, stop doing anything towards the project. Just focus on the thought process versus doing anything. The second is by getting it off of your mind entirely. Do not be afraid to take breaks when you become slightly burnt out. Taking a few moments, about five, and do something different entirely to get your goal off your mind and come back at it with a fresh pair of eyes, mind, and insight.
We tend to neglect what our body tell us weather its taking a bathroom break, needing some food, or needing something to drink. Taking breaks are no different. Taking a break every now and then is necessary to avoid our bodies from getting too fatigued. I Go hard for about thirty minutes and then my alarm goes off and I will grab a snack, play a video game, do a sudoku, something enjoyable for a few moments. After about 5-10 minutes of my break, alarm goes off again, time to get back to it. This keep my mind from getting burnout from the goal, so it does not become an agitation more than something I’m passionate about.
When falling down the rabbit hole of burning out we can tend to lose all motivation to go back to doing it all together. We must learn ourselves to what best fits when using the alarm system. While 30 minutes works for me perhaps 45 minutes works for you. Or 20 minute increments. This is completely adjustable to your personal preference. If I stop at 20 minutes my mind still races like crazy about the goal. Yet, at the opposing end, If I go to 45 minutes I’m barely thinking about the goal let alone the topic at hand.
Do not be afraid to play with this at first til you find your perfect time. If any of the previous experiences I described happen to you at various point, make the necessary adjustments. This may vary from day to day as well. Some days we can go longer but some days we can last five minutes. It will show in the quality of productivity if you try to force the work versus going at it in the proper mindset. Learn to listen to your body and try out the alarm system. Could be a complete game changer for you.
